Scituate Arts Association’s
Annual Juried Show
Best in Show and First Place Winners
Sandwich artist Eileen Casey, this year’s Best in Show Winner at the Scituate Arts Association's Juried Show is no stranger to such recognition having been awarded numerous Best of Shows, including SAA's Best of Show in 2016 and many other awards since beginning her exploration of pastel painting in 2007.
Her works have focused on Nature as a source of artistic inspiration ever since she began drawing plants, birds, and animals as a child. It continues to spark her imagination now as she paints and draws nests, trees, water and landscapes.
A graduate of Scituate High and Emmanuel College, she taught Elementary Art in Scituate, directed a school age child care center in Hyannis for 29 years and resides in Sandwich. She currently teaches adult pastel and printmaking classes at the Cape Cod Art Center in Barnstable and at the Creative Arts Center in Chatham. She remains active on the Pastel Painters of Cape Cod Board and is a signature member of several national and regional pastel and art organizations.
Of her winning piece, Pond Light, Casey says, “I have painted more than a few representational local waterscapes and backyard koi and lily ponds. This painting was a departure for me as I simplified the view of light sparkling on the water and plants at a nearby pond. It inspired me to paint an abstracted interpretation of the scene using unexpected colors and simple shapes, rather than a realistic rendering. This work was fun to create with a variety of soft pastels on sanded paper.”
Her work and the other 80 pieces are now on display in the SAA's Front Street Gallery.
